Firenze ospiterà l’International Congress of Egyptologists XI

La Soprintendenza per i beni archeologici della Toscana – Museo Egizio di Firenze, in collaborazione con l’Università degli Studi di Firenze e l’Associazione Culturale CAMNES (Center for Ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern Studies), organizzerà il prossimo ICE-International Congress of Egyptologists XI, tra 23 e 30 agosto 2015.

Il congresso rappresenta l’appuntamento fondamentale per la ricerca egittologica internazionale, cui partecipano i maggiori esperti del settore aderenti alla IAE – International Association of Egyptologists.

L’evento che si svolgerà a Firenze nell’estate del 2015 è il primo dopo una pausa nella serie di incontri della IAE, che si era riunita l’ultima volta a Rodi, nel 2008.

Perché la scelta di Firenze per ospitare un congresso di Egittologia? Il Museo Egizio di Firenze è considerato il decimo al mondo per l’importanza della sua collezione, una collezione che, formatasi compiutamente con la spedizione franco-toscana in Egitto nel 1828-29 guidata da Ippolito Rosellini e Jean-François Champollion, si è poi accresciuta nella seconda metà del Novecento con l’acquisizione degli importanti materiali, in particolare tessuti di età copta, provenienti dagli scavi della città di Antinoe condotti dall’Istituto fiorentino di Papirologia.

La locandina dell’evento è proprio dedicata alla Spedizione Franco-Toscana in Egitto degli anni 1828-1829: in particolare riproduce il grande dipinto, realizzato dal pittore Giuseppe Angelelli nel 1830, al ritorno dalla spedizione di Rosellini-Champollion, che si trova all’ingresso del Museo Egizio e che ne ritrae i partecipanti: tra i vari personaggi si distinguono al centro della scena proprio Ippolito Rosellini, in piedi, ben riconoscibile per la sua folta barba rossa, e, seduto accanto a lui, Jean François Champollion, mentre davanti a loro sono raccolti alcuni reperti realmente rinvenuti nel corso della loro ricerca, come ad esempio lo specchio in primo piano, appartenuto al corredo della nutrice della figlia del Faraone Taharqa (690-664 a.C.) ed esposto attualmente nella sala VIII del Museo Egizio.

La presenza del Congresso a Firenze è un onore e un riconoscimento dell’importanza dell’Istituzione e della collezione, la cui storia è legata all’Egittomania e alla nascita dell’Egittologia come disciplina.

The Soprintendenza for Cultural Heritage in Tuscany and the Egyptian Museum in Florence in collaboration with the University of Florence and the cultural association CAMNES (Center for Ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern Studies) will organize the next International Congress of Egyptologists (ICE) XI.  This will be held from the 23rd to the 30th of August 2015.

The congress is a fundamental event for international Egyptology research and it is attended by leading experts who belong to the International Association of Egyptologists (IAE).

The event held in Florence the summer of 2015 is the first conference since 2008 in Rhodes, which resulted in a break of the IAE meetings.

Why was Florence selected to house the Congress of Egyptology?  The Egyptian Museum in Florence is considered the tenth in the world due to its important collection.  It was formed by the Franco-Tuscan Expedition to Egypt in 1828-29, which was led by Ippolito Rosellini and Jean-François Champollion.  The collection was then increased in the second half of the twentieth century with important material acquisitions, especially Coptic Age fabrics found in the Florentine Institute of Papyrology’s excavations within the city of Antinoe.

The event poster is dedicated to to the Franco-Tuscan Expedition to Egypt in 1828-1829, in particular it reproduces the great painting by Giuseppe Angelelli in 1830.  This work details the Rosellini-Champollion’s Expedition return and participants, which is located at the entrance to the Egyptian museum.  Between the various people, Ippolito Rosellini is located alone in the center.  He is recognizable due to his thick red beard and is depicted standing next to Jean François Champollion who is sitting.  In front of them artifacts are gathered which were found during their research, such as the mirror in the foreground which belonged to the nurse’s kit of the Pharaoh Taharqua’s (690-664BC) daughter, which is currently exhibited in the Egyptian Museum room VIII.

The presence of the Congress in Florence is an honor and a recognition of the importance of the institution and the collection, whose history is linked to Egyptomania and the birth of Egyptology as a discipline.
